Our class
has so enjoyed reading Joanna Cole's Magic School Bus picture books
this year. They have made the link that the Friz's class is just
like ours - and so every time we read a story, they are living the
possibility that it could be just like us, doing some in-depth
learning project or exploration.

When I
asked them what we could do to show just how much we loved Joanna's
work, they said, "We should write our own book! And we can be in
it!" That is what we did. You will notice that our students have
captured Joanna's style of writing, some of the idiosyncrasies of
the children's dialogue, and predictability for story beginnings and
endings. They have even written in Crystal, our guinea pig
pet, to have a role like the Friz's class pet, Liz.
The class
has also done the "class reports" that proliferate her books with
background information. Because the class generated so many report
topics, we have a separate web page just for them.
